There are lakes in Minnesota, and then there is Lake Minnetonka.
I say that with full appreciation for how many beautiful lakes this state holds — but Minnetonka is in a category of its own. One of the largest lakes in Minnesota, spanning over 14,000 acres with more than 100 miles of shoreline, it isn't just a body of water. It's a way of life that shapes everything around it — the communities, the architecture, the pace of the day, and the people who choose to call it home.
A lake that lives in all four seasons.
What I love about Minnetonka is that it never goes quiet. Summer brings the boats, the sunsets from the water, the restaurants and bars you can pull up to by pontoon. Fall wraps the shoreline in color that genuinely takes your breath away. Winter brings ice fishing, skating, and that particular kind of stillness that only a frozen lake can offer. Spring feels like an exhale. If you're someone who wants to feel connected to where you live — truly connected — lakeside living here delivers that in every season.
The communities surrounding the lake are their own conversation.
This is important to understand about Minnetonka: it's not one city, it's a collection of distinct communities each with their own personality, price point, and lifestyle. Excelsior, Wayzata, Deephaven, Mound, Tonka Bay — each one deserves its own introduction, and we'll get there. But what they share is the lake itself, and that common thread creates a culture of outdoor living, community pride, and a deep appreciation for this very special place.
Real estate that reflects the full spectrum of lake living.
From charming cottages that have been in families for generations to architecturally stunning contemporary estates built right to the water's edge — Lake Minnetonka real estate is as varied as its shoreline. Some properties offer private docks and sweeping open water views. Others are tucked into quieter bays with a more intimate feel. The common denominator is that lakefront here holds its value, draws serious buyers, and rarely stays on the market long when priced right.
Minnetonka Schools — a district that stands on its own.
The Minnetonka School District is one of the most respected in the state of Minnesota, full stop. Families relocating to the area consistently put it at the top of their list, and the district delivers — with strong academics, exceptional programs, and a community investment in education that shows up in outcomes year after year. For families with children, this is often the deciding factor. And it should be.
Living on Minnetonka means living intentionally.
The people who choose this lake do so because they want more from daily life. More beauty. More connection to the outdoors. More of that feeling you get when you're sitting on a dock watching the sun go down over open water and realize — this is exactly where I'm supposed to be.
I've helped a lot of clients find that feeling here. There's nothing quite like it.

The Commute & Location
Minnetonka offers an incredible balance of sprawling, wooded privacy and sheer convenience. Centered around I-494, Hwy 7, and Hwy 12/I-394, you can get to downtown Minneapolis in 15 to 20 minutes. Commutes to the airport generally run around 20 to 25 minutes.
The School District
The majority of the city is served by the legendary Minnetonka Public Schools (ISD 276), though parts bleed into Wayzata (ISD 284) or Hopkins (ISD 270). Minnetonka Schools are a massive powerhouse for both language immersion programs and advanced academics, which permanently anchors the area’s premium home values.
The Corporate Connection
Minnetonka is an economic hub in its own right, anchored heavily by UnitedHealth Group’s sprawling headquarters. It also offers effortless commutes to nearby giants like Cargill in neighboring Wayzata and General Mills in Golden Valley.
The Neighbors
As one of the largest geographical suburbs in the West Metro, Minnetonka directly borders Wayzata, Eden Prairie, Hopkins, St. Louis Park, and Plymouth, acting as the ultimate bridge between the urban core and deep lake country.

Where to Eat & Drink
Lord Fletcher's (Spring Park) The on-the-water landmark that people have been coming back to for decades. Casual enough for a summer afternoon, big enough to feel like an event. The real draw is the dock, the lake view, and the fact that nothing else around here quite replicates it. A Minnetonka classic for good reason.
Maynard's (Excelsior Bay) Technically on the edge of Excelsior territory, but worth including here because the setting is pure lake. Right on the water, with a menu and atmosphere that match the surroundings. Go for the view and stay for the food — it earns both.
Rockvam Boat Yards / Pier 45 area (Spring Park) This is the marina-and-sunset experience the lake is known for. Less about the food, more about the feeling of being exactly where you're supposed to be on a summer evening. Worth knowing about if you want the real lake experience.
Where to Shop
General Store of Minnetonka (Highway 7) A family-run destination since 1984 — two stories and 20,000 square feet of curated gifts, home goods, clothing, Minnesota souvenirs, and kitchen finds. It skews toward thoughtful gift-giving over luxury boutique, and it delivers exactly what it promises. The on-site café does scratch-made soups, sandwiches, and baked goods, including popovers worth ordering. A genuine local institution and a good reason to make the drive.
Ridgedale Center (Minnetonka) The anchor mall for the western suburbs — not a boutique story, but a practical and well-stocked one. A full range of national retailers under one roof, and a reliable stop when you need variety and convenience. For the boutique and specialty shopping experience, Excelsior and Wayzata each have their own distinct character worth exploring separately.
Cari Ann and her team deliver a stress-free and seamless process to help you through your next life transition. Whatever that might be.
