I say that with full appreciation for how many beautiful lakes this state holds — but Minnetonka is in a category of its own. One of the largest lakes in Minnesota, spanning over 14,000 acres with more than 100 miles of shoreline, it isn't just a body of water. The majority of the city is served by the legendary Minnetonka Public Schools (ISD 276), though parts bleed into Wayzata (ISD 284) or Hopkins (ISD 270). Where to Eat & Drink

Lord Fletcher's (Spring Park) The on-the-water landmark that people have been coming back to for decades. Casual enough for a summer afternoon, big enough to feel like an event. The real draw is the dock, the lake view, and the fact that nothing else around here quite replicates it. A Minnetonka classic for good reason.

Maynard's (Excelsior Bay) Technically on the edge of Excelsior territory, but worth including here because the setting is pure lake. Right on the water, with a menu and atmosphere that match the surroundings. Go for the view and stay for the food — it earns both.

Rockvam Boat Yards / Pier 45 area (Spring Park) This is the marina-and-sunset experience the lake is known for. Less about the food, more about the feeling of being exactly where you're supposed to be on a summer evening. Worth knowing about if you want the real lake experience.

Where to Shop

General Store of Minnetonka (Highway 7) A family-run destination since 1984 — two stories and 20,000 square feet of curated gifts, home goods, clothing, Minnesota souvenirs, and kitchen finds. It skews toward thoughtful gift-giving over luxury boutique, and it delivers exactly what it promises. The on-site café does scratch-made soups, sandwiches, and baked goods, including popovers worth ordering. A genuine local institution and a good reason to make the drive.

Ridgedale Center (Minnetonka) The anchor mall for the western suburbs — not a boutique story, but a practical and well-stocked one. A full range of national retailers under one roof, and a reliable stop when you need variety and convenience. For the boutique and specialty shopping experience, Excelsior and Wayzata each have their own distinct character worth exploring separately.
