Discover Milly’s Wine Bar & Bistro in Minneapolis: History, Flavor & Unforgettable Vibes

Discover Milly’s Wine Bar & Bistro: A Minneapolis Gem in the Mill District

If you’re looking for a destination in Minneapolis that marries elegant ambiance, thoughtful design, global wine offerings, and a menu that invites lingering conversation, Milly’s Wine Bar & Bistro is a must-visit. Nestled in the heart of the Mill District, Milly’s is redefining what a wine bar can be in the Twin Cities—welcoming both wine enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

A Storied Space: Restoration, Intention & Identity

Milly’s is housed at 1129 Washington Avenue S, in a historical building with roots as a bottle company and subsequent incarnations, including an architecture firm. Co-owner and designer Brandon Witzel (of Quinn Design) has a passion for historic restoration and insisted on bringing this space back to life with respect to its original character.

The name “Milly’s” is a clever play on the Mill District location—and a nod to the personal connections of the founding team (friends, family, even pets named Milly). When the founders discovered the building, the vision followed—not the other way around.

During renovations, careful attention was paid to bring out historic charm while infusing modern warmth: tall windows, exposed timber, ambient lighting, and nuanced detail.  An elevator was added to make the upstairs lounge area accessible.

Upstairs, Milly’s also integrates a “not-so-little free library” concept: a rotating collection of books invites guests to settle in with a glass, sink into cozy corners, and read—blurring the boundary between wine bar, lounge, and literary haven.

The Vibe & Ambiance

Step into Milly’s and you'll be greeted by an atmosphere both intimate and elegant. The interior blends light and airiness downstairs—with bar seating and wide windows—with a moody, parlor-like upstairs lounge complete with couches, a fireplace, and soft lighting. Elegant pendant lighting, glowing table lights, and thoughtfully placed conversation nooks give the space a feeling of warmth and intention.  Green accents, plant life, and books infuse the space with life and character.

It’s the kind of place where you can sip wine at a bar, linger over small plates at a window table, or lounge upstairs curled up with a book—and feel equally at home in all spaces.

The Wine & Drink Experience

At its heart, Milly’s is about wine—but done in a welcoming, playful way. The team isn’t interested in intimidation; their goal is to make wine accessible, interesting, and fun.

One of their signature experiences is a wine-“game” format: for example, two half glasses of Pinot are presented—one is a true Burgundy (“Ron Burgundy”) and the other is not. If you can identify the real Burgundy (and, as a stretch, guess where the other Pinot is from), you may be rewarded.

But beyond the games, the wine list at Milly’s is globally minded—featuring Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand and Chile, Rosés from Europe, and selections from other wine regions. Their drink menu also includes non-wine options like Shrub & Soda (infused sparkling drinks) that showcase creativity. millysmpls.com

Sommelier Timothy O’Neil (formerly of Fhima’s) leads wine curation, and the kitchen and beverage team collaborate to suggest pairing options so guests can explore confidently.

A Taste-Forward Menu: Small Plates, Boards & Shareables

Milly’s food concept leans toward elevated sharables and plates designed to complement wine. Their menu includes items like:

  • Deviled Eggs

  • Whipped Ricotta Duo

  • Veggie Tart

  • Brussels Sprouts

  • Bruschetta

  • Burrata

  • Crab Cakes

  • Curated cheese & charcuterie boards—Somm Boards, Chef’s Boards, and Mezze Boards with hummus, tzatziki, and dips—designed to pair beautifully with wine selections.

Guests appreciate the balance: creative but approachable, flavorful but not overly elaborate.

Many visitors mention pairing a flight or glass of wine with thoughtfully curated snacks or boards while lingering and chatting. Community, Connection & Why It Matters

Because Milly’s is located in a revitalizing historic building in a shifting neighborhood, the owners viewed their mission as not just launching a wine bar—but contributing to the life and identity of the Mill District

They envision Milly’s as a place where locals and visitors alike can connect—to each other, to new flavors, and to the evolving spirit of Minneapolis. Their vision includes hosting community events and allowing the space to evolve in response to customer feedback.

The wine bar also holds a special place in the Twin Cities’ post-pandemic dining scene: Milly’s was the first wine bar to open in Minneapolis after the pandemic and has been lauded for doing so with thoughtfulness and intention. twincitieswine.com

Why Cari Ann Carter Group Loves It

From a real-estate and lifestyle lens, Milly’s exemplifies what we believe neighborhoods need: places that make you want to stay, connect, and deepen your roots.

  • A restored historic building adds character and narrative to the area

  • A wine bar that is approachable yet refined draws both longtime wine lovers and newcomers

  • Small plates and boards encourage social dining and lingering

  • The ambiance—cozy and elegant—makes it a date-night or gathering spot

  • It elevates the area around it, contributing to the vibrancy and walkability of the Mill District

Tips for First-Time Visitors

  • Try one of the wine “games” (e.g. Ron Burgundy flight) to engage your palate in a fun way

  • Order a board or pairing that complements your wine choice

  • Go upstairs and explore the lounge, cozy nooks, and books

  • Visit at off-peak times if you prefer quiet conversation

  • Ask staff for pairing suggestions—they’re passionate and well versed

  • Use their patio (when open) for fresh-air sipping

  • Keep an eye on events and special tastings—they host community gatherings

Milly’s Wine Bar & Bistro isn’t just another wine bar—it’s a thoughtfully curated destination that bridges architecture, design, community, and the joy of good wine and food. If you’re exploring Minneapolis or looking for your next favorite local spot, Milly’s absolutely belongs on your list.
